A Winner Once Again
This table is based upon a design I completed in 2019. The original piece was created in walnut. I wanted to use the same base and created a unique top from a special piece of wood I had been holding onto for 8 or 9 years. This was a piece I built on spec and sold at the Fine Furnishings Show in Providence, Rhode Island.
This piece is all about lightness. In the original design, I was working on refining an idea from 2014. This design has always felt like a sculpture, being shaped as it was built in order to get the right feeling for all of the individual parts.
The top relies on the use of the butterfly key as a joinery element. This is something I’ve been playing with for many years. The table top is resawn and opened up from a 3 1/2” piece of wood. A lot of work went into getting the edges to be light and solid at the same time.
The table is finished with a wiping varnish.
This piece was featured the Reader’s Gallery of Fine Woodworking Magazine, issue #295, March/April 2022.
